Despite all the effort of road safety campaigns and organisations, the toll of road incidents in Australia is not coming down. Each year around 1200 of our fellow Australian are being killed leaving tens of thousands of families, friends and loved ones devastated for the rest of their lives.

We need to understand that being distracted behind the wheel could and sometimes does, end in injury to a vulnerable road user, or even worse, an unintentional homicide.

So just as in the workplace where we utilise a risk management approach, we should apply the same principles when we drive…

  1. Plan your drive – direction, distance, rest breaks, time of day or breakdown support/tools
  2. Manage your distractions – electronic devices, loud music, loose pets etc
  3. Never drive fatigued or under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  4. Drive to the conditions – weather, time of the day, wildlife interactions, other road users
  5. Drive under the speed limit – not because of your ability, but to ensure you have enough time to react should something unforeseen occur

We all know someone who has been impacted by a road accident, losing a family member or friend, and yet these simple steps still seem foreign to some people and even as car technology improves, we still aren’t seeing a reduction in fatalities on the road.

Please don’t become a statistic and don’t leave things to chance.
