Staff spotlight – Misifolo (Misi) AHOVELO

Meet Misifolo, known to the team as Misi, one of our valued and experienced team members at the Port of Brisbane. Misi has been part of our team for over 8 years, and in that time, he has earned the respect and appreciation of those around him through his reliability, professionalism and steady presence.

With over 20 years in the security industry and a career that has taken him to some of Australia’s most remote locations, Misi brings a wealth of experience, perspective and stories to the role. Here’s what he had to say.

What is your professional background?

I am a Security Operator with over 20 years’ experience working in the mining industry, providing services across the NT from Groote Eylandt and Nhulunbuy (Gove) to the QLD Port of Karumba, Century Mine in Lawn Hill, and now the Port of Brisbane.

With so many great memories, you get to enjoy the culture, laid-back lifestyles, breathtaking views, and the unbelievable fishing and outdoor adventures.

You also get to experience the extreme heat, excessive rainstorms, and the dangerous wildlife in these areas.

Where are you working now?

I’m currently working as an MSG/APO at the Port of Brisbane and have been there since 2018.

What other Corporate Protection sites have you worked at?

Other sites include Abbot Point, Carmichael Coal, and CS Energy Kogan Power Station, where I have provided relief coverage for annual leave and IMG operations.

What are your primary responsibilities?

My primary responsibilities include:

• Access control
• Monitoring Maritime Security Zones
• Site patrols
• Verifying documentation and IDs
• CCTV monitoring

What do you find most fulfilling in your role?

The flexibility of the shipping schedule allows you to work an unorthodox roster, which could be difficult for some people, but it does have its advantages by being less structured.

The multiple port operations also allow you to engage with different work groups, experience various types of cargo transfers, and enjoy a change of scenery.

What do you find most challenging?

The shipping schedule is probably the most challenging part of the role due to its unpredictability. Working across multiple ports can also be difficult, with different SOPs, authorisations, and the management of various work groups.

What do you do in your spare time?

Most of my spare time is now taken up by junior footy events, DIY projects, and yard maintenance while living on acreage. I also enjoy travelling abroad or visiting my parents in the Pacific, which is always a great holiday and a chance to spend quality time with the family.
