With our team at Corporate Protection Australia recently securing a three-year contract extension, we took the opportunity to sit down with the crew at Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) to shine a light on the vital work they do. WICET has been a key site in our operations for more than a decade, and this milestone provides the perfect moment to reflect on our journey, celebrate our team’s achievements, and share a closer look at what goes on behind the scenes at this critical Queensland port facility.
How long have we been operating at Wicet?
Corporate Protection Australia (CPA) has been engaged at Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) since the site’s initial construction phase in 2011. During this period, we provided comprehensive Security, Emergency Response, and Medical Services. Following the completion of construction in 2016, CPA was retained to continue delivering security services on an operational basis, ensuring seamless protection and continuity.
What is our role?
Our team plays a multifaceted role at WICET, which includes but is not limited to:
- Managing site access and visitor control
- Acting as first responders for First Aid incidents
- Monitoring compliance across operations
- Overseeing vessel movements and maritime security
- Reporting and responding to incidents
- Supporting operational teams
- Contributing to environmental protection efforts
How many CPA staff work there?
We currently have 12 dedicated CPA personnel assigned to the WICET site, comprising both full-time and casual staff. Security coverage is maintained 24/7, 365 days a year.
- Day shifts include a Security Supervisor and a Maritime Security Guard
- Night shifts are staffed by two Maritime Security Guards
What qualifications are required?
Staff working at WICET are required to hold the following certifications and credentials:
- Certificate II in Security Operations
- QLD Security License Class 1 (Unarmed and Monitoring)
- Maritime Security Guard (MSG) Awareness
- Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
- Safely Access Rail Corridor (SARC) Card
- QLD Open Driver’s License (Class C)
- Provide First Aid, CPR, and Advanced First Aid
- Drug and Alcohol Test Collector Certification
- Site Medical and Drug Testing Clearance
- Site Induction and Familiarisation
What are the challenges for our staff?
The role of a Maritime Security Guard at WICET can be highly dynamic and demanding. During periods of consecutive vessel arrivals and departures, shutdowns, or increased site access, guards must remain alert and proactive. The pace can shift rapidly from calm to high-intensity operations, requiring adaptability and foresight.
What are the challenges for the manager on this service?
Key challenges include ensuring staff are equipped with the necessary training and resources to perform their duties confidently. The manager must also maintain close collaboration with the client to identify areas for improvement and anticipate operational changes that may impact service delivery.
What do you see as our major achievements in recent times?
One of our proudest achievements is the successful retention of the security contract from the construction phase through to ongoing operations. This continuity reflects the strength of our team and the trust we’ve built with the client. Our culture of mutual support and pride in our work has enabled us to overcome challenges and deliver consistent, high-quality service.
How do you see the future?
The future at WICET is full of promise. Our team is actively engaged with the client in exploring new initiatives for continuous improvement. Several projects are currently in development, aimed at refining our roles and enhancing service delivery. We look forward to evolving alongside the site’s needs and contributing to its ongoing success.
