Staff Spotlight – Annette Larkin

We recently spoke with Annette Larkin, one of our dedicated Security Guards, to learn more about her journey and experiences.

Originally from Dysart, she grew up and attended school in the small town, where life offered unique opportunities not often available elsewhere. “One of the best things about growing up in a place like Dysart was getting to do things most people wouldn’t have experienced,” Now based in Mackay, Annette still keeps in close contact with mates from those early days.

With 16 years of experience in the security industry, Annette has built a solid and rewarding career. A major milestone came four years ago with the completion of her first home—an achievement she proudly describes as one of the best decisions ever made.

What is your professional background?

When I finished school, I wasn’t quiet sure what I wanted to do. I started working for Dysart Council for a few years and then decided I wanted to get into Security. I started doing the security course and then did some Crowd control work at the Dysart pub and Moranbah workers club. After doing this work for over 12 months, I decided I wanted to get into doing Security on the gates in the mines. My first site I started working at, was Saraji mine, then I went to Norwich Park Mine, I have also worked at Broadmeadow gatehouse (old & New Site), Curragh & DBCT.

I currently work at Dally Bay and have served as a Team Leader at the Port of Mackay for over 18 months. In this role, I manage a team of three staff members. My responsibilities include preparing the team roster, maintaining the shift log, and entering shift details into Emplive to ensure accurate and timely payroll. I also coordinate meetings between the client, CPA Management, and myself to ensure smooth communication and operational efficiency.

Where are you working now?

I am currently working at Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal  

What other Corporate Protection sites have you worked?

I previously worked out at Curragh Mine for 6 years. 

What are your primary responsibilities?

Our day-to-day responsibilities on site are wide-ranging and diverse. They include conducting drug and alcohol testing, performing vehicle compliance checks, managing gate access, assisting in the warehouse, operating speed detection equipment, and escorting ambulances when required. We’re involved in a bit of everything, ensuring the site runs smoothly and safely.

What do you find most fulfilling in your role?

Knowing at the end of my shift, I have done my job to the best of my ability for CPA and the client. I love working with the crew I work with now.

What do  you find most challenging?

Being short and putting notes on vehicles windscreen, when you can’t reach, trying to get something off the shelf that someone has deliberately put up there.

And what do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy watching movies, heading out to drag racing and burnout events, and catching up with friends. I also have a creative side and love making candles and diffusers in my spare time.

Moreover, her willingness to speak up when things aren’t right indicates strong integrity and a commitment to the company’s values. It’s important to acknowledge and celebrate employees like Annie as they not only contribute to individual projects but also foster a culture of accountability and support within the workplace.

Makes an awesome cake as well, not that I would know as I am still waiting 3 years later!!
