Introduction
We got the chance to learn more about Nickolas Sorensen who is one of our Health & Medical team members who has been at Corporate Protection Head Office while he has been completing his Baseline Cert III Emergency Response and Rescue qualification.

What is your professional background?
I left the navy about 6 months ago. Initially I spent 3 years working with RADAR and SONAR, before retraining as a medic which I did for 6 years. Working as a medic at sea gave me a passion for remote area care, working within your guidelines and the limited logistics.

Medics are trained with backgrounds in paramedics and nursing which gave me an appreciation of both prehospital and tertiary care.

Where are you working now?
I am currently working as a locum, moving around filling where people need personal leave or sick leave.

What are your primary responsibilities?
I work as a paramedic, and emergency response is the main responsibility but many of the presentations have a primary health focus. Over the next few months, I’ll finish my rescue course and I’ll have a more active role with ESO teams and ERTs.

What other Corporate Protection sites have you worked?
I have worked at Anglo America’s exploration sites, Curragh, I’ve spent a few days at AMRUN will be a lot more over the next few months.

What do you find most challenging or fulfilling in your role?
The most fulfilling part of my job is a combination of getting to know people and being able to help achieve operational goals whilst providing care to people who would otherwise have limited access to health care.

And what do you do in your spare time?
I spend most my time at the moment renovating my house in Port Macquarie, in between that and work I read, game and surf.

I am addicted to cooking and feeding my family, so I am constantly making cooking something, and making a mess that I try my best to avoid cleaning up.
