Staff spotlight – Scott King

Introduction

We spoke with Scott, coming off a long rotation and a week of nights, but his visit to the office to receive a MAD award was too good an opportunity to learn more about him.

The award was in recognition of being instrumental in H&M maintaining coverage on many of its sites and providing outstanding interaction with many of our clients.

On a recent shift, Scott was called to an incident where a CMW was tragically killed. While dealing with this incident, Scott maintained a thoroughly professional approach and provided EAP to many of the other CMW’s who were friends with the deceased. The client noted how well Scott did and has praised him for his actions; an outstanding effort from Scott.

He is a very impressive member of our team.

What is your professional background?

I am a paramedic – I started in the Ambulance service of NSW in 2006, stationed in Sydney. I then transferred to QAS in 2010 to a remote rural assignment in central QLD as a single officer response at Miriam Vale. The two locations were very different environments, I enjoyed both but really embraced the single officer remote work. Even in the remote environment you feel part of a team with other emergency services such as fire & rescue – it was good preparation for my role at CPA Group.

Since leaving the ambulance service I have worked Oil & Gas, coal (under and above ground) and bauxite.

Where are you working now?

I am currently working at Gregory Crinum Mine, which is owned by Sojitz; it is a new client for CPA Group where I’m working 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, this recently changed to a one week of nights and one week of days.

What other CPA Group sites have you worked?

I have worked at North Goonyella Mine which is an underground coal mine. I initially joined CPA Group when they took over the contract at this mine, I then went to RTA Weipa on the basis of a longer rotation which I was seeking; I was there for 3 months but then came back to CPAG for the Gregory Crinum role.

More recently I filled in at Baralaba during my break. I have also filled in at Moorvale and Coppabella mines.

What are your primary responsibilities?

At Gregory Crinum I provide emergency response and medical care. We run a clinic and ambulance; we also conduct D&A testing. The long-term plan for us is to be involved in the emergency response team.

What do you find most challenging or fulfilling in your role?

I like longer rotations when possible (2 weeks on 2 weeks off). I enjoy working in remote locations within Australia and I also like the single officer side of the role.

I do like the site I am at currently where they have a good approach to safety. Until recently we had a team of two and now we are a team of four covering day and night shift. We all share a house, so we have to work and live well together.

And what do you do in your spare time?

My family live in Japan, so I am able to fly back regularly which is one of the things I like about my rotation. It is summer there now so I will be snorkelling the day after tomorrow with my wife and daughter, off the Izu Peninsula, which is a beautiful place with white sandy beaches and beautiful water. My daughter turns 12 during this visit so I am very excited.

I do speak Japanese quite well, before the ambulance service I worked in the tourism industry and many years ago I lived in Japan learning the language.

What would your manager say?

My manager is Kevin Hamilton. I think he would say I am reliable, maybe you should ask him.

We knew that Kevin had poached Scott to join CPA Group – they had previously worked together at another company so we can imagine Kevin is a strong supporter.

I am a supporter of Scott and his whole attitude and bearing towards his role, he epitomises what I expect of a professional paramedic within our industry. He has the ability to read our clients and the flexibility to adjust to their site requirements and idiosyncrasies.

He is humble in accepting this Making A Difference award, but he should be rightly proud of his achievements and everything he has contributed to the success of the company.
